HR’s Winning Team: Use These NFL Tips to Hire the Best Fit

If you think about a football franchise’s success, it begins with drafting talent, right? Teams look to create a talent pipeline to build their organization. Just think about how New England Patriots Coach Bill Belichick transformed the draft years ago. He didn’t draft players solely based on position. Instead, he selected the best overall athlete. He understood that you can do amazing things with a player who has athletic ability.

Why Is ‘A Good Fit’ So Important in the Draft?

Here’s how I see it. I can dream about playing quarterback for the Green Bay Packers all I want. The Green Bay Packers can select me, but no matter how much I want to succeed as quarterback and how much they want me to succeed, I just don’t have the abilities. They can get me to work out. They can train me for the rest of my life, but it’s just not a good fit. I would be miserable, and so would the team.

In the business and manufacturing realm, the last thing we want to do is to hire somebody that’s not a good fit. The new hire probably won’t want to leave because the pay and benefits are good. But they’ll be unhappy, and they’ll struggle. Plus, the people around them will struggle. That’s why it’s so important to find a good fit for the organization - find talent that you can train and develop.

How Do Teams Win Championships?

Organizations that win championships are great teams. Occasionally, individuals stand out and do great work. We make sure we recognize and reward that, but the most powerful way you can succeed is as a team. You want to celebrate success as a team or an organization, because we all win or lose together. Instead of competing individually against each other, it’s really about how we show up as a team. When hiring, one of the most important behavioral based questions in an interview is “How do you function in a team? Give me an example of where you worked as part of a team.”

When Do You Know You Have a Winning Team?

Teamwork lays the foundation for a winning organization. The team that drafts talent that fits the organization might not win the championship in year one. However, in year two and year three, it becomes obvious that they are fielding a great team.

Likewise, a mature, valid hiring process lays the foundation for exceptional teams whose efforts contribute to a successful organization. When customers, vendors, and suppliers start to comment on the tremendous talent within your organization, you know you have “drafted” and trained well. It’s time to celebrate the wins on your way to building a storied franchise.
